Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Lee Steere Stakes is a Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under weight for age conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 1400 metres at Ascot Racecourse, Perth in November. It is named after Ernest Henry Lee-Steere chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club from 1963 to 1984.

The Lee Steere Stakes is the traditional weight-for-age lead up to the Railway Stakes with M’lady’s Jewel (1991), Welcome Knight (1992), Willoughby (1997), Slavonic (1999) and Belle Bizaarre (2006) claiming the Lee Steere/Railway double in the last 20 years.

Five horses have won the Lee Steere Stakes twice with two horses winning the race three times: Scarpia (1893, 1894 & 1895) and Tarquin (1897, 1898 & 1900).

The shortest-priced favourite to win the Lee Steere Stakes in the last 20 years was Ellicorsam (2004) who was $1.65. The longest-priced winner of the Lee Steere Stakes in the last 20 years was Early Express who led all the way in 2003 at odds of $41.00.
